New and modern sports and recreation complex opens in Calgary today
City names new facility after Calgary basketball coach of 30 years
Dec. 2, 2019 / CALGARY: The City of Calgary will open the R. Simpson Sports and Recreation Complex today on 5505 Fourth Avenue. The new complex will include four basketball courts, 15 indoor activity rooms, one Olympic-sized swimming pool, one recreation pool and one ice surface suitable for figure skating and hockey. The facility is named after Ralph Simpson, a local youth basketball coach of 30 years.
“This new facility will be beneficial to the residents of Calgary and really encourage healthy lifestyle choices for all who use it,” said Joe Smith, mayor of Calgary. “I’m more than a modern recreational centre. This will become a place for all members of the community to hang out and use for whatever they need, be it sports, research or leisure.”
Four recreational and community groups supported the building of the new recreational facility. R. Simpson Sports and Recreation Complex will also include a library, coffee shop, three community rooms and free Wi-Fi across the entire building. The basketball courts and the ice surface are available for rental weekdays beginning at 7 a.m. Swimming lessons and fitness classes that are run by the City of Calgary will start on Dec. 3, 2019.
